Whats is an EQF level?
The EQF level (European Qualifications Framework) is a standard used across Europe to describe the difficulty and depth of learning in education. It has eight levels:
Level 1 is the most basic, for very simple skills and knowledge (like early education).
Level 8 is the highest, for very advanced skills and deep knowledge (like a Ph.D.).
Each level of the EQF shows three things about the learning: 1. Knowledge – What you know; 2. Skills – What you can do; 3. Competence – How independently and responsibly you can use your knowledge and skills.
By looking at EQF levels, teachers, students, and employers can understand and compare education levels across different countries. This way, students can transfer their qualifications across Europe more easily.
Which EQF level fits your study level?
Here’s a guide to help you match your level of study with an EQF level:
• College/Professional Certificates (EQF Level 4-5)
For college-level programs or vocational training (like diplomas and certificates), you’re generally looking at EQF Level 4 or 5.
o EQF Level 4: Often applies to secondary school graduates or equivalent, showing solid foundational knowledge.
o EQF Level 5: Represents post-secondary diplomas, often showing specialized knowledge for specific occupations.
• Bachelor’s Degree (EQF Level 6)
For bachelor’s degree programs, you’re at EQF Level 6. This level involves developing advanced knowledge and skills in a specific field, preparing students for more independent work and responsibility in a job or future studies.
• Master’s Degree (EQF Level 7)
For master’s degrees, EQF Level 7 applies. At this level, students develop highly specialized knowledge, analytical skills, and independent judgment in complex areas. It’s for those who are ready to take on advanced professional or academic roles.
